Biosketch: G. Latha Krishna RAO is secretary in the Department of Environment State government of Karnataka and is involved in several issues relating to the environment and the development. MAMATHA B R GOWDA

Biosketch: Mamatha Babbur Ramachandra Gowda has a wide range of professional experience from journalism to a community development. Presently she is working as Director (Communication) at the Government of Karnataka. Prior to this she was Community Development Officer with KUIDFC, she was responsible for the community development activities of Asian Development Bank's Urban Poverty Alleviation project. M. Gowda started her career as a journalist in Deccan Herald in 1985. From 1996, she worked as Communication Executive and later as a Product Manager till 1990 at Wipro. In 1990, she joined the Karnataka Civil Services as an Assistant Director. In 1992, she was posted as the public relations officer, Bangalore City Corporation, where she was instrumental in mobilizing community participation for BCC's developmental projects. The success of SWABHIMANA in generating sustainable community participation in developmental activities is one of her major achievements. In addition to developing a Community Participation Model for sustainable community development, she is interested in linking IT to the development sector. In her current assignment she is working on the Public Domain for the Chief Minister of Karnataka on the e-governance project with the main objective of providing the state with good governance.

KAPIL MOHAN

Biosketch: Kapil Mohan is presently working as Principal Secretary, Water Resource Department, Government of Karnataka. Prior to this he was Managing Director, Krishna Jala Bhagya Nigam Limited, Government of Karnataka. Earlier to this he was Deputy Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, New Delhi. He looks after policies in Distribution segment of Power Sector and implements two major schemes, Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (which aims at providing universal access to electricity) and APDRP "Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme", which aims at reducing aggregate technical and commercial losses of the power sector. Prior to this assignment he was at Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University USA as McNamara Fellow and worked in areas of Public Policy and Science, technology and environmental policy. His work focused on energy and climate change linkages and the public policy challenges being faced by the international governments. He has also worked with Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Government of India. He has served Government of Karnataka in various capacities such as Additional Commissioner of Bangalore City Corporation and Deputy Commissioner of Districts of Dharwad and Dakshina Kannada. He has also worked as Chief Executive Officer of Gulbarga district, in charge of rural development administration. Prior to this assignment he was responsible for preparation of state budget for three years. In these assignments, he oversaw the planning and implementation of governmental programmes at district level in his capacity as the head of governmental administration. He is interested in incorporating environmental concerns in project design and implementation strategies and also at policy making level. His experience in implementing several inter‐sectoral projects on sustainable basis has raised interest in making environment a public policy issue. An area of major concern for him is to find pragmatic solutions to environmental issues which meet the twin objectives of meeting developmental needs and equitable utilization of natural resources. He has won the international St Andrews prize for environment in 2001. The MIT‐SPURS program has awarded his paper the second prize in "Hidden Successes" an International competition on India's urbanization recently. Major areas of interest include public infrastructure, public finance, energy and climate change issues and application of good scientific ideas to solve environmental issues. Kapil is a management graduate with work experience in public finance, project management and supervision of project and programmes.

Biosketch: RustamVania is an independent creative communications consultant. As a graphic designer and cartoonist, he is interested in the interface between educational needs and creative design/communication solutions. He has over a decades experience in creating popular creative communication strategies for science, environment and development education. He was the founder editor and designer of Gobar Times, a monthly magazine supplement to Down To Earth, the science and environment fortnightly published by the Centre for Science and Environment. He is presently a faculty member at the Bangalore based Srishti School or Art, Design and Technology. He has a special interest in using cartooning as a medium of communication in spreading the message of sustainable development.

RANJANA GANGULY

Biosketch: RANJANA Ganguly has over ten years of professional experience in environment management. She is a Chemical Engineer by training. She started her career in the Paints and Coating sector. In the environment field she initiated her work in Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), a national level environmental legal authority of government of India. This is where she was exposed to environmental issues of national significance and had the opportunity of working in well known projects of national significance such as National River Action Plan, development of Action Plan for Problem Areas of India, Status of Pollution Control of Seventeen Categories of Polluting Industries and so on. After this, Ranjana worked with the Environment Management Division (EMD) of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). CII is an apex industry association of India representing 90% of all industrial sectors. It was in CII that she developed interest in one of her key areas of work - improvement of environmental performance of Industry. Since the year 2000 she had been associated with Tetra Tech India Limited, an international environmental consulting firm. The organization specializes in a broad spectrum of activities in the environmental field with over USD billion in revenue, employing over 8000 employees in around 180 offices around the world. Currently she is associated with GE India Technology Centre Pvt. Ltd as Manger, Health Care prior to this assignment she was with Ecoworks Consulting Private Limited (www.ecoworksconsulting.com), an organisation comprising of a team of professionals with extensive experience in a wide range of issues under the broad banner of sustainable development. She has worked at various levels including international and national policy initiatives; providing capacity building service to organisations and information dissemination through publications, seminars, workshops and so on. She uses innovative concepts, methodologies and combination of tools for improving performance of enterprises and help them progress on the path of Corporate Responsibility (commonly known as CSR). Some of the concepts used include design of management systems including environment and occupational health and safety, benchmarking and performance rating, green supply chain management, life cycle based approaches such as life cycle engineering (LCE), GHG accounting, environmental reporting, environmental performance evaluation, cleaner production & cleaner technology. As one of the main areas of work she has guided over 100 organisations for design and implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMS). During this activity she has interacted very closely with various levels of industry and based on this experience believes that with the right direction and commitment organisations can certainly bring about remarkable improvements in performance using simple systematic approaches to work. She is a trained environmental and occupational health and safety management system auditor. She has done over 250 days of auditing and more than 400 days of training on various topics such as management systems, performance evaluation, environmental legislation, EHS auditing, responding to the Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) such as UNFCCC, Montreal Protocol and Basel Convention and so on.

Biosketch: Dr. Madegowda is a social scientist and tribal rights activist form Biligiriranga swamy Temple Tiger Reserve (BR Hills) in southern Krnataka. He works at the field station of Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecolgoy and the Environment (ATREE) in BR Hills as a Programme Assoicate. At ATREE, he is responsible for participatory resource monitoring of sustainable harvesting of non timber forest produce by the Soliga tribal people who live in and around the forests of BR activities. Kade Gowda is closely involved with the implementation of Forest Rights Act in the district by ensuring that his own Soliga and other forest-dwelling tribes int he district obtain the rights over their land. He is also involved in research relevant to tribal development and wildlife conservation in BR Hills. Made Gowda was born into a Soliga tribal family in BR Hills. He completed hsi education at a VGKK tribal residential school and went on to obtain a Bachelors and Masters degree in Social work from School of Social Work, Roshini Nilaya, Unviersity of Mangalore. Later, he completed his Master of Science degree in Sustainable Development in Sikkim Manipal University, After that, he went on to complete his doctorate(PhD) in Social Work at Department of Studies in Social Work, University of Mysore, Made Gowda has benefitted from local NGOs who work with the Soliga people, the Vivekanda Girijana Kalayana Kendra (VGKK) and ATREE both of which supported him through education and employment. For the past 17 years, he is now working to ensure that the can contribute to overall development of the tribal people in the district. He has been instrumental in organising the tribal people into Sanghas (groups) from the village level up to district level. These sanghas work for improvement of basic facilities for tribal people, their rights, implementation of Government programmes Youth development, tribal cultural activities, and education and also involved in the several tribal movements and developmental activities. In 2014, he was invited to become a member of the Karnataka State Wildlife Board. His other memberships and honorary positions include District-level Forests rights Committee Chamarajanagar, Vivekananda Girijana Kalayana Kendra, BR Hills, Indian Society of Professional Social Work, Bangalore, Large Scale Adivasi Multipurpose Cooperative Society (LAMPS) BR Hills Secretary of Zilla Baudakattta Girijana Abhurdhi Sangaha, (Indigenous Tribal people's Organisation) Chamarajanagar and President of Shree Swethadhri Parisara Abhivrudhi Samiti (Eco-development Committee), BR Hills. He has published 11 papers in National and International Journals and books, he also presented the several papers in national and international conferences, Seminars, workshops. He also received the Vivekananda Girijana Kalyana Silver Jubilee Celebration at BR Hills.

RAMYA K

Biosketch: Ramya has over seven years of experience in the community radio sector. Having started her career has a Radio Jockey in 2007; she has progressed to be the Station Manager at Radio Active- Bangalore's first community radio station. At the station, she is involved in documentation of the station's activities, coordination of volunteers, designing communication and promotional materials, in addition to handling and managing the technical set up of the station. Ramya co-assisted in the production of the Active women series in 2008 which has nominated for the Radio Duniya Awards 2008. As an important component of the station's activity is outreach programme, she and her colleague spearheaded the RTE campaign which involved creating awareness on RTE in the slums, meeting with parents. Ramya was also a representative member of the RTE Task Force from the station. The activities of the Task Force included production of radio programmes, creating awareness, policy advocacy and documentation. As part of the Task Force she also had the opportunity to work on the design and documentation of the India Literacy Project on the implementation of the RTE task force chapters in Gulburga and Chikballapura. She has also worked on other projects like assisting students from Jain University on the National Entrepreneurship Network's E -week event in 2010 on the Aerobic Rice Plantation in Kolar. Ramya volunteered to work on the Radio Mathematics project awarded to the station by the Department of Science and technology, Ministry of Science and technology, Government of India as the Principal Investigator. This project involves production of 180 episodes of radio series and conducting outreach activities. In 2014, when One World Foundation invited applications for Community Radio Facilitation Centre's internship program, Ramya applied and was selected for a four day seminar that focused on Community Radio licensing procedures and steps involved. Following the program she was certified to assist potential applicants. She has been selected for the Lead Fellowship in 2015.
