Dr Parabita Basu

A Ph.D holder in Forestry (Wildlife Science), Parabita has more than 10 years of experience in natural resource and wildlife management, landscape ecology, climate change adaptation, landscape restoration, etc. She has expertise in GIS and remote sensing technologies which are useful in the above mentioned fields as well as maternal and child health issues, community and women empowerment, policy and program planning, etc.

She manages more than 1500 Internet Saathis spread across six districts of Jharkhand spreading digital literacy amongst rural women. She is also engaged in developing GIS base at different administrative levels and the spatial database for the planning, monitoring and capturing real time progress of the PLA meetings for improving maternal and child health issues in the state.

Dr Basu’s research findings have been crucial in declaring the corridors and its buffer area between Gir and Girnar protected area as “Eco-Sensitive Zone” under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.

Under the All India Tiger Monitoring Program 2013-15, Parabita led a team of researchers, volunteers for field data collection and analysis. The project aimed in countrywide assessment of spatial occupancy, population limits and abundance of tigers, habitat condition and connectivities within protected areas which was necessary for incorporating conservation objectives into land use planning.

She looks forward to (1) Understand other aspects of ecosystem management such as adaptation to climate change, resilience, services and restoration. (2) Be more aware of the new legal concepts, principles advancing the legal foundation for environmental protection.
